Our First Week Together
Janine, Jeanne and Kelly were visiting me in Puerto Rico and I suggested we get a prop to take with us everywhere and appear with us in all our photographs. So, on Friday, February 25th we set off for Old San Juan with the intent of finding a perfect man. I found Harry sitting on the top shelf of the first gift shop we entered with a ceramic woman who may have been his wife. I grabbed him and ran to the other side of the store where the other girls were admiring other props. As soon as they looked at Harry, they were unanimous in declaring that he was the one! He is about 6inches tall, a balding, middle aged fellow with his hands on his hips at all times. He is ceramic with a spring spine that enables him to bobble. He's wearing a purple hawaiian shirt which is unbuttoned to expose his hairy chest, sunglasses, a white lei and a hula skirt over his pants and sneakers.
We got the register slip which we refer to as his "birth certificate" and we whisked him out to the streets of Old San Juan raving about finding a man who fit our needs so well. He wasn't much of a shopper but he was a big drinker, the beer belly should have tipped us off. We have some great pictures of him drinking colorful cocktails. A small area of the street was dug up at the top of Fortaleza Street and Harry was so drunk that he fell over the rubble on the street. From there, we have a picture of him being held by a police officer guarding one of the government buildings. He is just staring at the cop with his hands on his hips.
Later in the evening, we went to a fabulous Italian Restaurant called Al Dente located at 309 Recinto Sur. I had been there previously but we never would have found it again if it weren't for Harry. He was so proud of making me look just a little further down one of the streets to find it that he stood on the table during the whole meal, very pleased with himself with his hands on his hips.
We drove home to our condo that night with Harry secure in his seatbelt while the four of us marveled over "what a find" Harry was. He had sparked something in us that made us bond and laugh for the remainder of the vacation. He brought us places emotionally and physically that we never expected to go. He heightened our sense of adventure and filled a void that we hadn't known existed.
He really is supposed to be my boyfriend, however, there is no sense of possessiveness. There were places the other girls went in which Harry accompanied them and I stayed home but we never ceased to be united in our enthusiasm that Harry should be shown a good time. He went to the beach, had cocktails on beach tables, sat in lounge chairs, posed with the guys who erect tents and deliver chairs. One day he went to the Rain forest with the other girls and had a few tumbles but they were overshadowed by his visit to the poolroom on the way there, pumping gas and and getting showered by the waterfalls. The water caused his grass skirt to get a bit tattered and although Janine has combed it, we may have to make him a new one when necessary. He just disdainfully looks at the flaws in the grass skirt with his hands on his hips and shakes his head.
One day, the girls found the rented car had a flat tire. Harry just stood with his hands on his hips shaking his head when the rental company sent a man to fix it. Nevertheless, he was happy to jump in and go to the scrumptious brunch the hotel put on for him. After that, he really wanted to be supportive to me by going to complain to the manager regarding some rude staff members and new rules that would forbid him to attend the beach alone in the future. The manager wants me to accompany all guests to the facilities in the future. I guess Harry will remain fat seeing he will not have use of the gym facilities there. The girls had to restrain him on the seat outside of the manager's office while I had the meeting. He kept wanting to walk by the glass window and make me laugh but the girls didn't think that would be respectful and held him back. He was just so disgusted when I emerged from the meeting and he heard the new rules that he put his hands on him hips and just shook his head.
We took him to restaurants at night and took pictures of him eating with us and standing by restaurant signs. He was delighted with the views at Richie's and they were glad we were bringing someone new that we hadn't introduced them to yet. He danced to their music and begged me to dance with him although I just couldn't boggie as well as he did. He posed with Manny and the new waiter he's training as we departed and just stood looking at the new guy with his hands on his hips and shaking his head because the guy slipped up a few times.
He loved the ferry ride to Culebra but when a girl that had been throwing up approached us, he yelled "No, No No" with his hands on his hips so that she wouldn't sit with us and get vomit all over us. He is very protective of us.
You should have seen how excited he was that he was going in the golf cart with us and he adored the beauty of Flamenco Beach so much that he just stood with his hands on his hips and gawked.
He grew quiet as the girls packed up to go home but reluctantly got in the car to accompany me as I drove them to the airport. When we arrived at the terminal, he jumped out of the car and posed for a final picture with them and then he became teary eyed as he caressed me for a picture of us brooding that they were leaving.
I know he is deeply in love with me and we plan a life of adventures together but he hasn't said a word since the girls left!
